The Child Dental Benefits Schedule does not require any registration or application. If your child is qualified for Medicare, you will receive a letter from the government. For children to be eligible, they must meet certain criteria:

  • A child between the ages of 2 and 17 on at least one day of that year
  • Medicare-eligible

At least one of these payments during the calendar may qualify a child for the program:

  • Part A of the family tax benefit
  • Carer Payment
  • Youth Allowance
  • ABSTUDY
  • Parenting Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Special Benefit
  • The Veterans’ Children Education Scheme (VCES) for 16-year-olds and above
  • A child who is at least 16 years old may be eligible for assistance under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme.

Eligibility is determined at the start of each calendar year. In order to be eligible, you or your child must meet the requirements on at least one day of the year.

You can use Child Dental Benefits Schedule payments to cover all or part of your child’s oral health care needs, so you won’t have to pay out of pocket for these services.

Having a child eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a great way to ensure that your child receives quality dental care. A child may obtain up to $1,000 in benefits over a two-year calendar period. The child can use this to pay for basic dental services.

You can learn more about the program on the Services Australia website. Additionally, by logging in to your MyGov account or calling 132 011, you can check your child’s eligibility and CDBS balance.

As long as a child is eligible for the program in the second year, the extra funds can still be used
if not fully utilized in the first year. However, any balance remaining after the second year will not be used for the next.

Providing that your balance amount covers the fees for the appointment for the day, you will not need to incur any out-of-pocket expenses. As Medicare will handle the bulk billing of your claim, there is no patient co-payment required.
