A tooth veneer procedure involves removing a thin layer of enamel and then the veneers are bonded to them. The attachment of veneers causes no discomfort because enamel does not have nerve endings. An anaesthetic may be recommended to minimise pain, but the cosmetic procedure is usually painless.

A good candidate has good oral health and sufficient tooth enamel, as veneers require removing a small amount of enamel. If you have gum disease or tooth decay, your dentist may want you to get them taken care of first before having dental veneers put on. 

In addition, dental veneers are a suitable option for minor cosmetic imperfections or discoloured teeth. It cannot be used for severely misaligned or crooked teeth.

1. Porcelain veneers are stronger and more durable. They can last longer than composite veneers.
2. Custom-made porcelain veneers can be created to match any tooth colour. Thus, they look like your real teeth and blend in seamlessly with your other teeth.
3. Porcelain veneers are very resistant to chipping and staining due to the strength of the material and the glaze that is applied after the dental treatment. On the other hand, composite veneers are more porous and therefore susceptible to staining.

Every dental procedure has its risks. While dental porcelain veneers may have some risks, they are not life-threatening and can be avoided with the proper care.

1. Porcelain veneers are placed by removing enamel from the teeth. There may be an increase in sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This relatively common side effect should fade after a few weeks. If tooth sensitivity persist, consult your dentist.
2. When untreated dental issues exist before veneer placement, veneer failure is most likely to occur. Your dentist may advise you to get gum disease or tooth decay treated first before getting dental veneers.
3. When a veneer is not fitted correctly, it can alter your bite and cause bruxism or jaw pain.
4. Though it rarely happens, it is possible for the dentine beneath the enamel surface to be damaged during the enamel removal procedure.

Getting porcelain veneers usually requires multiple visits that last about an hour each. The process could take up to two hours, depending on how many you need to complete. 

In the evaluation before treatment, we will discuss your porcelain veneer goals. This session involves taking photographs, impressions, and x-rays to design your porcelain veneers. We’ll send your impressions, along with your oral and dental health history, to a dental laboratory. They will fabricate your veneers, which could take up to two weeks.

Then, your dentist will remove a small amount of tooth enamel to prepare your teeth for veneers. In order to minimise any discomfort and make it easier for you to remain still during the cosmetic treatment, your dentist may administer an anaesthetic as a preventive measure. 

During the time you wait for your permanent porcelain veneers to be created, you may be provided with temporary veneers. We will schedule another dental appointment once the porcelain veneers have been completed.

When your porcelain veneers are ready, we will make sure that they are the right colour, size, and shape for you. After that, it will be cemented to your prepared tooth and cannot be removed.
